Standing next to the green on #17 at Lake Malaren Golf Club in Shanghai, China, Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño grabbed a club from his caddy, Jeffrey, and hit one of the most clutch shots he’s ever hit. A chip-in birdie at the 17th hole gave him a three-stroke lead and all but sealed a victory at the 2013 BMW Masters Presented by SRE Group. After an “exciting” finish on #18, Gonzalo stated after his round that “I made it a little more complicated”.
Even after a double-bogey on #18, Fernandez-Castaño finished at 11-under par for the week and came away with the trophy. The BMW Masters was Gonzalo’s 7th career victory on the European Tour. With an upcoming move to the United States and a spot on the Ryder Cup team in sight, he said that this victory came “just at the perfect time”. “There’s never a bad time for a victory, let’s put it that way. But this has been just the perfect one.”
This victory moved him up 29 spots to #4 in the European Tour “Race to Dubai” and earned him a spot in this week’s WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai. “Hopefully we get to see Cleveland tomorrow in every newspaper around the world,” he stated.
Preparing to begin his first full season on the PGA Tour, this win will certainly give Gonzalo momentum going into 2014. We are very excited to see him play in the US on a weekly basis and are proud to have him as part of our staff.
