Will Wilcox, a Cleveland Golf Developmental Staffer, is making his first PGA Tour start today. I recently posted about his victory on the Canadian Tour. That win followed by another strong performance last week earned him the exemption into this week’s Canadian Open on the PGA Tour. Will has two wins and a Nationwide start already this year in addition to this week’s appearance. He took a few moments to anwser a few of my questions about this year’s stellar play and today’s PGA Tour debut.
You received an exemption into this week’s Canadian Open on the PGA Tour via your position on the Canadian Tour money list. I know you went to Canada three weeks ago only planning to play one event, but you got into an extra event two weeks ago and won. That victory at the Dakota Dunes Casino Open essentially put you in a spot to play this week’s PGA Tour event. Take us through your last few weeks–why you decided to go to Canada, how you ended up staying an extra week, and how all that resulted in this week’s appearance on Tour. I decided to come to Canada because my friend from Edmonton (I played with him at Clayton State) said the Edmonton tournament was a great event and that I would enjoy playing in Canada. After I tied for 28th, I got a sponsors exemption (from Dan Dodman, President of Cleveland Golf Canada) into the next event at Saskatoon which incredibly led to a WIN and a 3rd place on the Canadian Order of Merit. I then traveled to Winnipeg as I was offered a spot in the next event and also given a 2 year exemption on the Canandian Tour. I got a top 5 at Winnipeg that earned an exemption for this week’s Canandian Open. This is your first appearance at a PGA Tour event. Your first Nationwide tour appearance came earlier this season at the Fort Smith Classic where you narrowly missed the cut. What did you learn from that experience that you will take into this week? I have learned to not get so excited about the event and I am working to stay more even keeled. You have two wins this year, recently on the Canadian Tour and earlier this year on the Hooters Tour. You seem to be on a bit of a hot streak of late—you mentioned you followed up your win two weeks ago with a 5th place finish last week. Have you been working on anything in particular? Just constant competition has kept me sharp. I have been working on balance and course management mainly. What part of your game has seen the most improvement? Course management, definitely course management. You just finished your college career at Clayton State last summer. Did you expect this much success so soon? I knew I could play well, but I have dedicated more time to practice. I am learning to deal with the travel and being a pro. It is all about adapting to whatever the circumstances are. With this early success, have you updated your goals? I am trying to get in the top 2 on the Canadian Tour money list which will give me an exemption to the 2nd stage of PGA Tour Q-School this fall. You have to hit one great shot coming down the stretch to win your first PGA Tour event, maybe this week—what club do want in your hands? Cleveland CG7 Tour 7 iron. What else should all our blog readers know about Will Wilcox? My favorite vacation place is St Croix- I have been there 3 times this year and am going again next week. Will, thanks for your time and play well this week–we will be pulling for you. Follow Will’s progress on the PGA Tour Leaderboard!
